Unraveled
Surrounding Mount Rushmore are millions of acres of forest that have deeming stories. Several conspiracies have encircled the woodlands. Detailed sightings of extra-terrestrials, doomsday bunkers for threats to U.S. soil, and a secret chamber behind the eyes of Lincoln have been whispered among the people who visit the National Forest. Do any of these conspiracies have any truth to them?
Character Analysis
Gutzon Borglum
John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, or Gutzon Borglum, was an American painter and sculptor best known for his work on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA (Rasmussen). Borglum was known for being skilled, determined, and unkind throughout his career.
Borglum was hired by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to sculpt a monument of General Robert E. Lee into a mountain in Georgia. Borglum presented the idea for the carving of the mountain, but work did not begin until 1923 because of the war (Ruiz). However, Borglum did not stay on the project long as “trouble had been brewing between Borglum and the businessmen directing the project, and Borglum was abruptly dismissed. In his anger, Borglum destroyed the sculpture designs, further angering the businessmen” (Sculptor Gutzon Borglum). After this, the bust of Lee that he had sculpted was removed and no trace of his work was left in the final piece (Sculptor Gutzon Borglum). Borglum was also known to have embraced the Ku Klux Klan. He was noted making several racial remarks towards African Americans, calling them things such as, “slippered assassins (Rasmussen).” A former governor of South Dakota once said “No one could get along with Mr. Borglum for any length without losing his temper -- unless one was a saint, and there are few human saints” (Ruiz). Overall, he was not known to be easy to work with or have the nicest personality.
Despite those accusations, Gutzon was extremely skilled in sculpting and painting. He studied art in California, Paris, and Spain (Sculptor Gutzon Borglum). He entered a sculpture into the St. Louis State Fair that ended up being a gold-medal-winning art piece. Gutzon sculpted a bust of President Abraham Lincoln that was displayed in the White House for many years, and then in the Capitol Rotunda (Ruiz). When Gutzon was working on the sculpture in Georgia, he started using dynamite to blast off the rock. He carried this skill with him to work on Mount Rushmore, which ended up saving the project time and money (Ruiz). One of his sculptures was accepted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it was the first sculpture to be bought by the museum from an American who was still alive. He won many awards throughout his career one of the most prestigious ones being the Logan Medal of the Arts (Ruiz).
Gutzon Borglum was a determined individual. The Black Hills Mountain, which Mount Rushmore was carved, was love at first sight for Borglum. That mountain was the first location that Borglum looked at when deciding on a place to sculpt the monument. This mountain was in a remote area and made of hard and rough granite rock (The Making of). He had such a grand vision for the monument, wanting to tell the history of the first one hundred and fifty years of our nation through rock Borglum “thought big and dreamed big and talked big” (The Making of). He drew up plans to sculpt the heads of four United States presidents, each head being six stories tall (The Making of). Also included in these plans was a room, which was intended to hold national artifacts and important historical documents (The Making of). Gutzon Borglum was so determined to make Mount Rushmore a monumental success, that he sculpted the heads out of plaster before carving the mounting, making sure to accurately depict the expressions of the models (Park Archives). Unfortunately, money ran out and Borglum died before his elaborate plans could be executed (Sculptor Gutzon Borglum).
Uncovering Conspiracies
Along the 1.2 million acres of terrain in Black Hills National Forest, home of Mount Rushmore, there is speculation about several conspiracy theories (Black Hills National Forest). Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills are a gateway to suspicious activity including, aliens, doomsday bunkers and secret chambers. The first conspiracy was that UFO’s, or Unidentified Flying Objects, had been spotted circling the sky above the Black Hills National Forest. According to the National UFO Reporting Center, or NUFORC, numerous towns surrounding the Black Hills Forest such as Custer, Hills City, and Keystone, have several reports of odd-shaped flying objects. One report states “There was a circular disc in the sky that had a S in the center of it” (NUFORC Report’s). Although the NUFORC has never confirmed or denied any of these reports on their trueness, there seems to be a mass of reports that indicate that the Black Hills area is plagued with suspicious intergalactic activity (Mount Rushmore Pt.2).
The second conspiracy alludes to a doomsday room near or on Mount Rushmore premises. Rushmore Cave, just south of the monument, is the closest cavern that runs directly under Mount Rushmore (Mount Rushmore Pt.2). Speculation has evolved that a tunnel leading from the cave to Vivo’s, a doomsday base, could house government officials and politicians if a nuclear attack would commence. Vivo’s xPoint, a doomsday plot location in the Black Hills, are classified as “military-built, concrete and steel, all-risk bunkers” (Vivos xPoint). Although there is no proof that a connection between the cave and Vivo’s exists, there is also doubt in this theory as South Dakota is a far journey for a government official to travel amid nuclear warfare (Mount Rushmore Pt.2).
The final theory suggests that a secret chamber behind the eyes of Lincoln may hold government secrets such as the existence of aliens, or flat earth theory (Mount Rushmore Pt.2). Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, envisioned a tunnel to hold the story of our great nation within the rock of the monument (Klein). Unfortunately, funding ran out and Borglum died before the tunnel could be completed. While the 70-foot room is closed off to the public, speculations had arisen as to what could be in the room because it has twenty-four-hour guards. Today, the room holds a titanium vault that houses sixteen porcelain panels engraved with the text of important historical documents (Klein). This theory is hard to prove with a lack of evidence that the room holds more than the vault since no one has been able to get their eyes inside the room. Employees of the Mount Rushmore site have concluded that the chamber used to house the fireworks that were used in the Fourth of July celebration (Mount Rushmore Pt.2). Park officials have stated that any conspiracies revolving around the contents of the secret chambers are untrue and that they only hold the titanium vault (Mount Rushmore Pt.2). In conclusion, the theories of the existence of aliens in the Black Hills, stories of a doomsday room, and a secret chamber holding government secrets seem like a far-reach to try and credit for factuality. The lack of evidence supporting claims of intergalactic activity makes the conspiracy hard to believe. While the doomsday bunkers do exist, there are no proof in the fact that government officials use those specific ones when escaping a threat on U.S. soil. It is confirmed that there is a tunnel behind President Lincoln's eyes. However, the contents of the chambers had been confirmed by park employees, making the theory that the room holds more than the proven titanium vault and possibly fireworks, difficult to challenge.
Conclusion
After researching the Black Hills National Forest and Mount Rushmore, it led to several conspiracies about the land and mountainous plain.
-
Are there extra-terrestrial events occurring in the forest?
-
Are there doomsday bunkers underground to house government officials in case of a strike against our nation?
-
Is there a secret chamber behind Abraham Lincoln’s eyes on Mount Rushmore holding government secrets?
Following the research, it has been concluded that while there are reports of strange occurrences that align with what some may believe about aliens, there is no substantial evidence to support these claims. As for the doomsday bunkers, they do exist. However, there were no supporting claims as to whether the bunkers were for government officials if there were to be an attack. Finally, the secret chamber does exist, but it is an unfinished tunnel for which the sculptor had great plans. Several park officials have confirmed that the only things housed at the site are the titanium vault and possibly some fireworks from the Fourth of July holiday.
